Dandelions are popping and will really come into flower with the warmer temperatures. The yellow flower is already evident with the puffball phase arriving shortly. During this time of the year "energy flow" in the plant is directed upwards toward yellow flower and seed reproduction. Although extremely tempting to get out and spray those yellow flowers, it is after puffball development the "energy flow" is more downward for vegetative growth. It is at this stage that postemergent weed controls are most effective. The popular compounds used or in combination like 2,4-D, dicamba, MCPP and MCPA are translocated downward. It will still be necessary in most cases for multiple herbicide applications during the spring to control dandelions and other perennial broadleaf weeds. At this time, postemergent herbicides provide 60 to 90 days of control. Although dandelions are not as evident, the most effective time for controlling dandelions is in the fall with postemergent herbicides.
